Get Around with Travel Mobility Scooters

by Doug Graves

Life with limited mobility can be most traumatic. But a travel mobility scooter that not only gives a physically challenged person 'wings' but also helps them fulfill him travel dreams can be a priceless thing for them.

Travel mobility scooters are unlike a wheelchair. As the name suggests, it requires batteries and is designed like a regular three-wheel scooter. A main seat coupled with a small foot-plank, handlebars and two rear wheels make it very comfortable for the physically challenged. The batteries can be charged in rotation and the seat can be rotated for more accessibility.

There is great emphasis on utility design in travel mobility scooters. Some models can be folded and most have a small turning radii to allow people to function easily in travel scenarios. Travel mobility scooters are also of light weight so that they can be easily and quickly carried through platforms and terminals. Mainly with trains and airplanes in mind, designers have also started making travel mobility scooters adaptable for other public places and several are often available in markets, malls etc.

Further innovation brought in the travel model based on the first mobility scooter of 1968 built by Bridgeport, Michigan resident Allan R Thieme for a relative with multiple sclerosis. He patented that invention under The Amigo brand now famous internationally. The travel mobility scooter was a further innovation and now brings joy to many disabled who want to travel.

Operating the travel mobility scooter is easy with a panel for finger controls, thumb paddles and reverse/forward switch apart from speed controls that are all based on the rear-wheel drive concept.

Those with whole-body disabling or systemic problems prefer the travel mobility scooter. Also, many people do not like to be seen using the wheelchair. Travelling for them can be a problem emotionally also. The travel mobility scooter is a good option for them. Neither does it require much strength as compared to a wheelchair.

Several elderly people are choosing the travel mobility scooter over the wheelchair because of lesser requirement of use of manual power.

There may be problems with the travel mobility scooter when the user wants to place it adjacent to a bed and slide out or, when some low-level obstruction comes in the way of the travel mobility scooter. Turning may be a little problematic too with the travel mobility scooter.

On the whole, however, travel mobility scooters prove more convenient than a wheelchair depending on individual needs.
